- Edit (TBD)
Irrational Inquirer
Description
This climbs the face between the trad lines of Mean Mistreater and the Rich and Dave Route. (1) Scamper out a ledge leading left from near the base of Mean Mistreater, climb up a short right-facing dihedral, then move up and left to a bolt. Work back right and head up incipient cracks to a small roof system that can be somewhat skirted on the left to the Mean Mistreater ledge system. Belay from gear on the ledge system, left of Mistreater's fixed belay station. (2) Climb up the Rich and Dave Route crack for a short ways until possible to strike right, up face to a bolt underneath the long roof band protecting the final headwall left of Mean Mistreater. Turn the roof (crux), skirt another bulge on the left, then work up the headwall to the top.Originally, Steve led the second pitch ground up without bolts, but he avoided the crux roof by traversing out from the Rich and Dave Route above the roof, resulting in a stout 5.10 R. Again from the ground up, Brad later did the FA of the crux roof, then did Steve's 5.10 R finish. In 1990, apparently without consulting anyone from the FA, a party rap-bolted a line between Mean Mistreater and Irrational Inquirer, naming it International Inquirer. Unfortunately, the last few bolts of International are on the line taken by Steve and Brad, thereby essentially eradicating the possibility of experiencing the upper part of the headwall as they and several others found it in the 80s. There still may be some R-rated terrain lower down though, so I've kept the R rating in this post.
Location
Find the base of Mean Mistreater. The route begins off the left end of the ledge to the left leading to a very obvious ten-foot tall right-facing dihedral.
Protection
Standard Tucson trad rack (include micros).
Bolts and top-anchors updated by CASA in 2017.
