Description

Stone Hill ascends a big, right-facing dihedral that you could end at about 35 feet and move to the right across a small ledge to a rappel tree on

Element 101

. If you continue up to the tree above, the climbing is 5.7+ and has a runout section for about fifteen feet unless you move 8 feet right to a thin seam that takes small gear.

Location

This climb is the leftmost climb in the Platitudes. It is easy to identify as it is a left-facing dihedral that gets wide on the second half. If you follow the base of the second band, you will run right into it.

Protection

The first 35 feet are low fifth class and can be protected with several pieces from #0.5 to #2 cams. The second half takes larger pieces from #3 up to #5 sized cams. If you reach far back in the dihedral, you may get smaller pieces in, but it would put you off balance. When the dihedral widens above a #5, you can balance out to the right and get small pieces in. I used two nuts from small to medium.
