Hook Canyon

Description

Grumpy route ascending a less popular canyoneering descent route.

Route ascends up weaknesses in "Hook Canyon" taking the right hand fork

A bit of a grunt with loose rock, brush, and post holing up deep sand and scree.

The upper headwall prior to the summit mesa has some limited free climbing and some soft rock aid climbing.

Fair bit of loose rock which could be deadly for the belayer (and leader for that matter).

From the mesa, and ascent to the summit can be had by traversing around to the lower angle slopes.

Descend canyon.

Not recommended.

Location

The climb up “hook” canyon ascends between the elevation points 6955 on Mount Majestic and 6930 on Cathedral Mountain.

Protection

Fairly robust rack of cams, nuts, and a selection of pitons. Baby to 1" angles useful in soft rock holes drilled with a 3/8" bit (even then they'll fall out).
