Big Bertha

Description

The route starts up a series of dihedrals and skirts left of a large cave - not unlike “Bathtub Mary” in the Red! It then follows an arete for two bolts - probably the crux - before reaching easier climbing and the wonderful view from the top. There is a lot of rope drag on a moderate route of this length. To help minimise it we suggest using extended alpine draws on bolts 12, 10, 7 and 2 (counting from the top down).

Location

This route is at the southern end of Dark Hollow. There is a small, battered Hackberry tree close to its start. Lots of choss rained down on this poor tree in preparing the route and, unfortunately, there is probably more to follow. Belayers beware - wear your helmet!

Protection

14 bolts plus mussy hooks
