Description
Sylas is a fairly short but enjoyable and fun route on the east side of the canyon. It has a brief but somewhat technical & cryptic crux that is well-protected. I believe this is a good route for the budding 5.11 climber to project and the 5.11+ climber to go for the onsight.
Climb up the slab, and clip the 1st bolt as for
Mexican Burrito
. Now head straight up into the arcing, right-facing dihedral above. Creatively make your way up this corner, clipping bolts out right.
Now get into position as the corner joins with the perplexing headwall above. Spread your legs, and smile as you make crux moves over the small roof onto the vertical wall. Figure out the best way to clip the last bolt, pull onto the ledge, and clip the anchors. It's over before you know it.
Location
This is to the right of
Mexican Burrito
and left of
420
. It shares a 1st bolt with
Mexican Burrito
.
Protection
1 long draw for the 1st shared bolt of
Mexican Burrito
, 4 quickdraws for the route itself. There is a 2-bolt anchor on ledge at the top with lowering carabiners.
