Peak Mountain 3

b. Red Book Point

Description

[Edit]

One of the higher summits in the middle of the Calicos, surrounded by interesting rock situations with fun scrambling sequences and some thoughtful navigation.

name is from Courtney Purcell's print guidebook, Rambles & Scrambles. . . (also known as "Point 4608").

So far we know of these main routes: * West side (from Second Pullout parking): . . . (perhaps easiest, and likely useful as descent).

  • SouthEast gully + face (from Assisi Rd or Sandstone Rd parking): . . . (also useful as a descent, lots of interesting scrambling, gets more difficult higher up).

  • NorthWest Ridges (from Frostie Shack Pass).

  • NorthWest gully + ridge (from the Middle Sand Flat): . . . (sustained exposed lower section leads to fun ridge).

  • South gully + ridge (from Stairmaster Pass): . . . (at least one difficult crux sequence, lots of interesting scrambling).

also ... * Red Book Ridge traverse (from Stairmaster Pass to Frostie Shack Pass) . . . (Link-Up? could be preceded by traverse of the Calico South Ridge).

The Courtney Purcell book suggests a SouthEast ridge route. We're not sure of the details - ? perhaps it is a (better) variation of the ESE gully route?
